Booking a first chiropractic visit in Jacksonville is easy. Walking in the door without knowing what will happen is the part that keeps people on the fence, sometimes for months, while the ache they wanted help with settles in for the long haul. So here is the whole visit, start to finish, the way it actually goes at our office. No mystery, no pressure, and no being cracked by a stranger thirty seconds after you sit down.

Before your first visit: how to get ready
Plan on the first visit taking 45 minutes to an hour. Later visits are much shorter, but the first one is where we do the real detective work, and rushing it helps no one.
A few things make the visit smoother:
- Wear comfortable clothes you can move in. We will ask you to bend, turn, and raise your arms. Jeans are fine. A suit is workable. Gym clothes are perfect.
- Bring your ID and insurance card if you plan to use insurance, and a list of any medications you take.
- If you have imaging, bring it. X-rays, MRI reports, or notes from another provider all help, especially after a car accident. Do not worry if you have none. Most people start without any.
- Know your story. When the pain started, what makes it better or worse, and what you have already tried. You do not need notes. Just think it through on the drive over.
If you were recently in a wreck, tell us when you book. Auto injury visits involve some extra documentation that protects your claim, and our auto injury care page explains why that paper trail matters.
The consultation: we listen first
The visit starts with a conversation, not a treatment table. One of our doctors sits down with you and digs into your history. Where the pain is, how it behaves, what your work and sleep look like, old injuries you forgot you had. Half of a good diagnosis comes from this talk, so we do not rush it.
This is also your time to ask anything. Whether chiropractic can help your problem, how many visits things usually take, what it costs. If money is on your mind, we wrote up a plain-numbers guide to chiropractor costs in Jacksonville you can read ahead of time.
The exam: figuring out the why
Next comes a hands-on exam matched to your complaint. We check how your spine and joints move, test muscle strength and reflexes, and feel for the restricted segments and guarded muscles that usually sit behind pain. You stay clothed the whole time.
If something in the exam suggests we need a closer look, we will talk about imaging. Most patients do not need X-rays on day one, and we do not order them to decorate the wall. We order them when the exam says they will change the plan.
The findings: you hear the plan before anything happens

Once we know what we are looking at, we explain it in plain English. What is causing the pain, what we recommend, roughly how long it should take, and what it will cost. If your problem is not a chiropractic problem, we say that too, and point you to the right provider. After more than 700,000 adjustments between them, our doctors have seen enough to know the difference. You can read more about Drs. Chad and Andrea Shaw before you ever come in.
Nothing happens to your spine until you understand the plan and agree to it. That is a promise.
The first treatment: gentler than you expect
Most patients do get treated on the first visit, once the exam is done and the plan makes sense. Depending on what you need, that may include an adjustment, soft tissue work, or both.

About that popping sound, since everyone asks. It is not bone. It is a small change in pressure inside the joint, the same thing that happens when you crack your knuckles, and it does not hurt. Some people feel mild soreness the next day, like after a new workout. Most feel looser walking out than they did walking in. If the standard approach is not right for you, we have gentler, low-force techniques, and for stubborn tendon and muscle problems we sometimes add shockwave therapy later in care.
Research summarized by the National Institutes of Health finds that side effects from spinal manipulation are usually mild, things like temporary soreness, stiffness, or a headache, and most fade within a day. Serious complications have been reported, but they are very rare, and the NIH notes that a thorough health history is the best safeguard, which is exactly why our visit starts with that long conversation. You can read their overview of spinal manipulation research if you like going to the source.
After the visit
You leave with a plan, not a sales pitch. That usually means a recommended visit schedule for the next few weeks, one or two simple exercises, and a habit to change at your desk or in your sleep setup. Then care gets shorter and more focused: check progress, treat, adjust the plan as you improve.
